In 2007, David Schramm built three guitars for the Guitar Foundation of America

Convention. This is one of those three. The soundboard is cedar and the lattice bracing is made from balsa and carbon fiber . See Schramm's comments below.

Above are thumbnails of  the head with Brazilian rosewood face plate, and the rosetta with natural burlwood inlay.

These two pictures detail of the book matched Brazilian rosewood on the outer layer of the multi-layered back and sides with shimmering Koa bindings, cedar top, rosewood arm rest and the padauk bridge.

What finish do you use?
SCHRAMM  I use wide variety... it depends. I use lacquer, French polish, oil varnish, water based finishes, but most time lacquer or French polish.

What about the top of the lattice braced guitars - it's not shiny?
SCHRAMM The finish is similar to Smallman and Gilbert. I use as little lacquer as possible, 2-3 coats, it's lightly sanded and then steel wooled. It is thinner than French polish. Nico Van der Waals, a builder in Europe likes this and he is the one who influenced Gilbert's finish. When a player is on stage and the lights hit the guitar, it doesn't reflect into the eyes of the audience. It is more of an acoustic finish than a show finish.

What is in the future for you? Will you continue to experiment or do you want to settle on a particular design for, say, economy of means?
SCHRAMM  I couldn't build the same thing over and over forever. I'm always curious about the guitar. For example, I built an Oribe influenced type pattern but with some things I learned from Hauser. It's a good design. But next time, I'll want to do something different.

Dave, thanks for talking with us.
SCHRAMM  You're welcome, it was a pleasure.
